1 Reason Your Knees May Be Hurting While Riding

Posted by Saddle Up on Sep 27th 2017

Do your knees and legs hurt while riding and you can’t figure out why? Your stirrups are long enough and you like the saddle… so what’s the problem?

It may mean your stirrups aren’t turned. “What does that mean?” you may ask. A very good question and here’s the answer:

When you buy a brand new Western saddle, the stirrups aren’t turned and the fenders lie flat. You have to turn them around to get your foot in for mounting and then it’s up to your leg to maintain the turned out stirrup so your leg can be in the proper position. This causes unnecessary stress in your leg which can cause tension and throw off your riding. Not to mention it will hurt after a while!

If the saddle you bought, new or used, does not have the stirrups turned, it would be in your best interest to take the time to turn them. And it’s very simple! In next week’s blog we’ll talk about how to turn your stirrups so you can ride pain free!

“The rhythm of the ride carried them on and on, and she knew that the horse was as eager as she, as much in love with the speed and air and freedom.” – Georgess McHargue
