Do Horses Have Emotions?

Posted by Saddle Up on Oct 18th 2017

More and more people are starting to realize that animals do have emotions. Maybe not as deep or conscious as humans, but the emotions are still there.

Horses can feel happy, sad, frustrated, depressed, afraid, excited… a whole wide range! They are masters at hiding their emotions, however, especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for!

Getting to know a horse well helps you key into his emotions. Becoming a master at reading eye and facial expressions on horses is another.

Taking the time to be still and listen to your horse and read his feelings is a great pastime, though sometimes hard to do in this fast-paced world that we humans live in. As humans, we have a hard time slowing down.

But the horses can’t fully live in the human world. They are very quiet, peaceful creatures, not concerned with time or agendas. And it is there, in that quiet space, that we’ll be able to pick up on how they are truly feeling, if we take the time to listen.

Domesticated horses depend on us for survival, so as their caretakers it is up to us to take care of them as best as we can physically, mentally… and emotionally.
